The second triennial Partners in Latino Ministry Conference (PALMCON II) will soon be here. It is not too late to start making plans to attend as it promises to be a great time for Hispanic ministry workers to join together to share experiences, to learn from the experts and each other and to support fellow laborers for Christ. The conference will start at 1:00 PM Wednesday Oct 19, 2016 and end at noon Friday Oct 21, 2016. The event will be held at the Texas Education Service Center 19 (ESC19) with hotel accommodations at the Hawthorne Suites Hotel on the corner of Airport Blvd & Boeing Ave. The Esc19 is directly across the street from the hotel and both are within walking distance of the Airport.
The conference will feature Dr. Juan Martinez, Vice Provost of the Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena California, as the keynote speaker. Dr. Martinez will discuss significant opportunities and challenges that “majority” churches in the U.S. confront when reaching out with the Gospel to Latinos. He will consider how culture, language, generations, beliefs and faith foundations of the majority churches lead them to faulty Latino ministry approaches. He will also discuss how these churches can avoid taking a detached or “overlord” approach to ministry by training Christian leaders to serve in the midst of disruptive change. There will be presentations by other speakers, as well, including Dr. Leopoldo Sanchez, Director of the Center for Hispanic Studies, Concordia Theological Seminary, St Louis, Mo. As an attendee, you will have ample time to interact with Dr. Martinez and the other speakers on these issues and to provide your own perspective based on your “on the ground” experiences.
Our sessions will use an interactive learning format – an environment of moderated inter-communication designed to allow attendees to learn from each other, to share ideas and experiences and to foster networking among Latino ministry workers. It will be an excellent learning and growing opportunity for all conferees; one from which you will surely be able to take home and use some of the ideas and methods that can improve your own ministry efforts. Our committee is confident the take-aways from this conference will yield tremendous benefit to your ministry.
Conference registration is available now through the PALMCON web site (www.palmcon.org). The schedule of registration and fees as well as hotel accommodations can be found at the same website. The cost for individuals of $200 (couples $300) covers all meals and materials. Hotel costs are not included but as we did in the past, the LHMI will be offering a limited number of scholarships to those who need help to defray the cost of attending. Information on this and other conference details can be obtained by contacting Rev Richard Schlak at email@example.com or Mrs. Claudia Calvillo at firstname.lastname@example.org.
